SUMMARY:Authors Talk: Roxy Manning and Sarah Peyton In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Reading: Roxy Manning & Sarah Peyton: Antiracism\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Annie Bloom’s Books welcomes authors Roxy Manning & Sarah Peyton for readings and discussions centered on their two new books\, How to Have Antiracist Conversations: Embracing Our Full Humanity to Challenge White Supremacy and The Antiracist Heart: A Self-Compassion and Activism Handbook. \nExplore a groundbreaking approach to fighting racism and white supremacy culture through compassionate yet fierce dialogue inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s Beloved Community. Roxy and Sarah provide practical tools and frameworks that foster connection and courage\, reimagining antiracist conversations. \n\n\n\nAbout How to Have Antiracist Conversations: \nUtilizing Dr. Martin Luther King’s Beloved Community framework\, activists will be empowered to create change and equity through fierce yet compassionate dialogue against racism and systematic white supremacy. Can a person be both fierce and compassionate at once? Directly challenge racist speech or actions without seeking to humiliate the other person? Interrupt hateful or habitual forms of discrimination in new ways that foster deeper change? Dr. Roxy Manning believes it’s possible—and you can learn how. \nAbout The Antiracist Heart: \nThe Antiracist Heart delivers a unique path to antiracist activism and introspection by applying neuroscience exercises\, questionnaires\, and journaling prompts based on the book How to Have Antiracist Conversations. In each chapter\, Manning\, a clinical psychologist and antiracist activist\, and Peyton\, a neuroscience expert and educator\, both trainers in Nonviolent Communication\, unpack key concepts like bias and trauma using brain science alongside practices for self-connection and dialogue. \nRoxy Manning is a clinical psychologist and certified Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) trainer. Since 2004 she has operated a private consulting business and regularly holds international workshops and intensives centered around nonviolent communication and social change issues. She has served as executive director of Bay Area Nonviolent Communication and focuses her outside efforts on working with the homeless population of San Francisco. \nNeuroscience educator Sarah Peyton is a certified trainer of nonviolent communication by the CNVC and teaches throughout the world more than 120 days a year. SUMMARY:FREE WORKSHOP: Identifying and Responding to Racial Microaggressions
DESCRIPTION:Are You Confused about How to Respond to Microaggressions?\n \n \n \n \n \n White supremacy is baked into our brains in very hidden and unconscious ways. Microaggressions are brief and commonplace moments of harm where racist assumptions–whether unconscious or not–come to the surface through language or behavior\, creating indignity and pain for people of the global majority. \nEmbedded racist beliefs and assumptions include things like: “Asians are good at math and science.” or “Most Black people aren’t smart.” or “People who don’t look white are likely not born in this country.” Even if you don’t consciously believe these things\, the unconscious nature of racialized assumptions runs very deep\, and microaggressions are these sentiments coming to the surface.  \nOften\, folks who are enacting microaggressions don’t even know they’ve done something offensive or hurtful; they may not even be aware of the racist assumptions that are implicated by the behavior or language.  \nKnowing how to respond to racial microaggressions is tough – whether they are directed at us\, we make them\, or we are witnessing them. The subtle\, often unconscious nature of microaggressions are a challenge. Those on the receiving end of these statements often wonder – Did that really happen or am I being too sensitive? How do I speak up when I have so much to risk? Those who have committed a microaggression wonder: does it mean I’m racist if I said that? Those who witness and wish to help may think\, how can I intervene without causing more harm?  \nJoin Roxy for this introduction to the challenges of responding to microaggressions from the perspective of the person making them\, the person watching them or the person experiencing them.  \nLearn skills to help you regain choice and effectiveness when responding to improve your chances of creating connection while attending to the needs of those most impacted. Our empathic but direct coaching will help create the shifts in awareness you’re seeking. \nThis event is a sneak-peek of Roxy’s new book\, How to Have Antiracist Conversations: Embracing Our Full Humanity to Challenge White Supremacy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Watch the Book Trailers \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register for Free Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n >> Registering for this event will register you for all free events in August’s AntiRacist Books Launch Week Experience.  We’ll send you notifications about the events\, including how to join\, and you’ll also be added to Sarah and Roxy’s mailing lists. SUMMARY:Fierce Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to learn skills for brave and self-connected antiracist conversations\, without collapse\, burnout or self-contempt?\n \n \n \n \n \n When you witness microaggressions\, racist acts\, or racist language do you feel helpless and uncertain about how to take fierce and compassionate action? Are you frozen and unable to voice your concerns even though your heart is yearning to intervene for yourself and others? Are you deeply committed to antiracism principles but find it perplexing and disconnecting when you hear others talk about it in ways that you don’t enjoy? \n\nBased on Roxy Manning and Sarah Peyton’s new book series\, How to Have Antiracist Conversations and The Antracist Heart\, this course will empower you and provide clarity\, helping you cultivate a strong foundation and a fierce\, compassionate resilience that will guide your actions. It is designed to support you\, even if you’re unsure of where to begin or experience a sense of freeze and distress in response to racial harm. \nThis 6-week course supports people of all racial identities to learn and practice the dialogue skills of empathy and self-compassion process-work that supports fluidity\, groundedness\, and a capacity for action in the face of racist speech\, unconscious bias\, microaggressions and more. \n\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What Skills and Capacities Will You Learn and Practice?\n \n \n \n \n \n \nConversations with self\, including an understanding of trauma\, time travel and unconscious contracts\nThe inner work of self compassion and moving through unconscious contracts that block action\nThe importance of commitment to beloved community as the foundation for antiracism activism.\nConversations welcoming rage\, shame\, anger and other emotions that often shunned in the conflict-averse tenets of white supremacy culture\nConversations with supporters\, including working with powerlessness and privilege\nThe four dialogues of the Authentic Dialogue framework and considerations in choosing and preparing for each dialogue. \nLearning and practicing Roxy’s Authentic Dialog framework\, including dialogues to be heard/seen and to invite mutual understanding\nConservations with resistors\, and the importance of understanding the neurobiology of bias + disgust\nConversations across power differences\n\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 \nMeetings Every Thursday for Six Weeks\, August 10th – September 14th\, 4:30-6:00 PM Pacific Time (convert your timezone here)\nDuring this class series\, participants will practice conversations with self\, conversations welcoming rage\, conversations with supporters\, conservations with resistors\, conversations across power differences and applied conversations.  \nWhere do we meet?\nThe course will meet via online video conference (zoom). Recordings provided. \nHow is the Course Structured?\nThe course will include lecture and demonstrations\, and break-out rooms to practice and embody antiracist dialogue skills. \nBreakout Group Options for Global Majority* Participants \n\nWe acknowledge the unique challenges encountered by Global Majority people when engaging in this type of work in spaces that tend to be white dominant. These can include being asked to educate white participants about racism\,discrimination\, and social justice issues\, being seen and treated as representatives of their entire race or ethnicity rather than being seen as individuals\, and experiencing microaggressions such as having their opinions or experiences dismissed or minimized. \nGiven that skills practice in breakout groups is a major component of this course\, we want Global Majority participants to have choice about their group make-up when practicing this work. \nOne strategy we will implement to support choice for Global Majority participants in this class is to offer the choice of opting into breakout groups that are for Global Majority people only. \nGlobal Majority-only groups will be supported by Global Majority assistants. \n\nSupport from Our Assistant Team: \n\nWe will have a team of assistants who are skilled in offering empathic and resonant support and who hold a commitment to work towards anti-racist action. \nOur hope is that you would receive gentle and caring support to help address the blocks you encounter as you engage with this important work.\nIf emotions such as shame\, pain\, or helplessness arise during our sessions\, you can request one on one support in the moment from someone on our assistant team.\nNote: This work is not therapy and is not a substitute for therapy. If you have a sense that you would be destabilized by yourself or others speaking about difficult events\, then this course may not be for you. \nWhile we hope that the processes and information that we share can be of use in your journey\, we do not have the resources to support extreme psychological difficulties.\n\n \n \n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Cost and How to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Sliding Scale Cost Options:\n\n$500 – Supporter Rate: If you have financial assets\, or identify as middle or upper/owning class\, then this is the rate for you.
